Canstruct has been commissioned by FaHCSIA (Families and Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs) to build 17 individual fully-furnished buildings in three states of Australia. Construction commenced in June and the project should be completed by December, 2011. Twenty-two local Indigenous workers have been employed to construct these homes and offices.
Wherever possible local people and facilities are used for all aspects of the project. Canstruct is building in the following communities – Doomadgee, Mornington Island, Coen, Hope Vale and Mossman in Queensland; Wilcannia in NSW; Fitzroy Crossing, Beagle Bay and Ardyaloon in WA. Once again Canstruct’s vast experience in remote construction has meant that these jobs will be completed in approximately 6 months
The workforce in Wilcannia and Hopevale were wholly local indigenous people. The only "outside help" was two weeks of training in the Force 10 building system in these communities. The local workforce have now successfully completed three new buildings.
