The new Kuunchi Kakana (Families Together) Centre is springing up at Lockhart River. Robin Murphy OAM visited the site on September 16, 2015 and was extremely pleased to see the progress that has been made. All the footings, floors and most of the walls are up, with the roof trusses going in this week. Local builder, Shane Smythe said that he was hoping to have all the roof trusses up by the end of this week, September 19.
Denise Hagan from the Puuya Foundation, who has commissioned this building is delighted with the progress to date. “We have had a dream for a community led early years centre for Lockhart River for some time – and with your help its coming to reality! We are so very appreciative….Our Board and the Mayor Wayne Butcher and Council believe that by giving Lockhart’s children the best start we can, it will certainly change their life opportunities.”
Robin Murphy also presented the Puuya Foundation with a donation of $150,000 from the Murphy Family Foundation at a special dinner to go towards this building. Special guests at the dinner included: the Board of the Puuya Foundation, Dottie Hobson, Veronica Piva, and Denise Hagan; Mayor of Lockhart River Wayne Butcher; CEO of Lockhart River David Clarke; Puuya teachers Tanya Koko, Moira Macumboy, Leandra Warradoo and Rebecca Elu; School Principal Siobhan Jackson; Shane Smythe from ESW Builders and Stuart Whitworth from Canstruct.
