Last Thursday John Power, representing the Power Hotel Group, was handed the keys to the newly constructed Weipa Motel.

Queensland building company, Canstruct, commenced work on the 38-room motel in June this year and were pleased to have completed the construction in record time.

Canstruct site manager John Montoya explains “When I first got the plans I thought it would be impossible to build such a large building in such a short amount of time. It was not a convent ional bui ld, as there were extra requirements that had to be met inside the building to comply with certain standards, and we had to provide double wall thickness with extra insulation to ensure absolute sound and fire proofing,” Mr Montoya said.

“However, we got along very well with our client John Power, who is a great guy and really helped expedite the project. We hope we can continue our association in 2012. Besides Brad Muller wants a chance to wreak his revenge on John Powers in the Weipa Gift!” he said.

Brad and John raised $550 for the Weipa Kindergarten with a 100 metre “Gift” run, which was won by John, and there are plans afoot for an Iron Man competition in 2012.

Dan Murphy, CEO of Canstruct commented “We are extremely proud of the rapid progress of this project. We achieved lock-up in under six weeks and handed over the building in approximately 15 weeks. All the site staff worked extremely hard, in particular John Montoya, Brad Muller, Phil God dard, Brendan Bassett and David Marsh.”

Canstruct used fellow Queensland company, Force 10’s engineered building system which is built to withstand cyclones, Force 10 winds, flood and fire.

“The Force 10 product adapted perfectly to this application and was a major reason for the fast turn-around and the fin ish of the building is of extremely high quality,” Mr Murphy said.

John Power said “We are looking forward to further participation in the development of the infrastructure of Cape York and ensuring it is a well-regarded and popular destination for local, interstate and international tourists alike.”
